Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam has been placed on a fresh four-day remand for questioning in a case filed over the alleged suicide abetment of his second wife Mariam.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon Hossain passed the order on Thursday following a petition by the investigation officer. SI Rafiqul Islam of the prosecution department confirmed the matter.
Nazrul was produced before the court on Thursday after completing his previous four-day remand. DB Inspector Mohammad Salahuddin and also the investigation officer sought a fresh seven-day remand for further questioning.
Police recovered the hanging body of Mariam, the second wife of Gazi Nazrul Islam, from a flat at the National Assembly Members’ Hostel (NAM Bhaban), opposite the Parliament complex, on Sunday evening.
Later that night, police took lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife, Maksuda Islam, into custody.
That night, Mariam’s father SM Masum Billah filed a case accusing lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam, his wife Maksuda Islam and the deceased’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman of abetting her suicide.
The following day, a court placed Nazrul on four-day remand and Maksuda Begum on one-day remand following a petition by Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police SI Md Shamsuzzohha. That night, the case was handed over to the Detective Branch (DB) of police for investigation.
After completing her remand, Maksuda Begum was sent to jail on Tuesday. Nazrul Islam completed his four-day remand, following which the investigation officer sought a fresh seven-day remand on Thursday.
Another accused in the case, Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman, was sent to jail on Wednesday after his arrest.
