A Dhaka court on Tuesday imposed a travel ban on four people, including former Bangladesh High Commissioner to the United Kingdom Saida Muna Tasneem and her husband Touhidul Islam Chowdhury, over graft allegations.
The two other people barred by the court from leaving the country are their two sons, Alvi Azfar Chowdhury and Javed Opgenhaffen.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir passed the order, allowing a plea of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
According to the case documents, an investigation is underway against Touhidul Islam Chowdhury, Saida Muna Tasneem and others over allegations of embezzling approximately Taka 2,000 crore in loans from various banks and financial institutions through collusion and corruption, and laundering the money abroad.
“A reliable source revealed during the investigation that the persons concerned might leave the country and flee abroad. Therefore, it was essential to impose a ban on their travel abroad in the interest of a proper investigation,” the ACC plea said.
The same court also imposed a travel ban on Emma Claire Burton, the British-origin wife of former education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, for not submitting a wealth statement.
