The International Crimes Tribunal-2 has ordered the confiscation of half of the movable and immovable assets of five convicts sentenced to death, including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, to compensate the families of those killed or injured during the July-August 2024 mass uprising.
The tribunal directed that proceeds from the sale of the confiscated assets be distributed to the affected individuals or their families through the July Foundation or another statutory body.
A three-member tribunal led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, chairman of International Crimes Tribunal-2, issued the order on Tuesday after delivering its verdict in the crimes against humanity case. The other members are Justice Md Manjurul Basid and Justice Noor Mohammad Shahriar Kabir.
The tribunal chairman read out a summary of the 557-page verdict, sentencing all seven absconding accused to death and imprisonment until the end of their natural lives.
The seven convicts are Obaidul Quader; Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim; former state minister for information and broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat; Jubo League President Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash and General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil; and Chhatra League President Saddam Hussain and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan.
The tribunal ordered the confiscation of 50% of the movable and immovable assets of Quader, Nasim, Arafat, Parash and Nikhil. The tribunal issued no such order against Saddam and Inan.
The verdict said the proceeds from the sale of the confiscated assets should be used to compensate people killed or injured during the July-August 2024 uprising, or their families, through the July Foundation or another statutory institution.
