A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed eight accused on remand in a case filed over the beating death of Special Branch (SB) Sub-Inspector (SI) Altaf Hossain, 58, in Savar’s Aminbazar.
Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Tajul Islam Sohag ordered five days’ remand for six of the accused and three days each for the remaining two after a hearing on Tuesday afternoon, Sub-inspector Arif Hossain of the prosecution department confirmed the matter.
With the latest arrests, nine people have so far been arrested in the case. Fifteen people have been named as accused in the case.
The accused placed on remand are Md Alauddin, 29, Md Apon, 26, Md Jihad, 23, Imran Hossain, 25, Nur Mohammad Rudra, 24, Md Golam Rabbi, 22, Billal, 34, and Delwar, 33.
Earlier, case investigation officer SI Md Zakir Al Ahsan of Aminbazar Police Camp under Savar Model Police Station produced the accused before the court and sought 10 days’ remand for each of them in two separate petitions.
The petitions said the accused, acting in collusion, killed the complainant’s husband and left his body before fleeing.
The investigation officer said the accused needed to be interrogated in police custody to ensure a proper investigation, uncover the circumstances surrounding the killing, recover the weapons used in the crime and identify those involved.
The main accused in the case, Johurul, 32, was placed on five days’ remand on September 7.
Lawyers for the accused sought cancellation of the remand petitions, while the prosecution opposed the plea. After hearing both sides, the court granted remand for different periods.
How the killing happened
According to the case complaint, an argument broke out around 7:30pm on September 5 in front of Abul Kalam Azad’s auto garage in Bardebi West Para of Savar over a person parking an auto-rickshaw there.
Altaf Hossain came under attack when he tried to stop the argument.
He then took shelter at his son’s business establishment, Grand Fashion, to save his life. Around 8:10pm, the accused, armed with locally made weapons, attacked the establishment.
The complaint said the accused indiscriminately beat Altaf with rods, pipes, hammers and sticks, leaving him critically injured.
When his son Ariful Islam tried to save him, the accused also attacked him with sharp weapons, leaving him injured.
The accused also vandalized the establishment, causing damage worth Tk5 lakh, and allegedly stole Tk2.20 lakh from the cash box.
The injured were later taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared Altaf dead. His son was admitted in critical condition.
Altaf’s wife, Shiuli Parvin, filed the murder case with Savar police.
