Three accused in the case over the death of primary school headteacher Ranjila Parveen have been sent to jail after completing five days of remand.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon Hossain passed the order on Saturday following a petition from the investigation officer. Prosecution Department Sub-Inspector Rafiqul Islam confirmed the matter.
The accused are Poni, alias Para Poni and Poni Gazi; Cedric Julian; and Rakib Hossain.
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police Sub-Inspector Shahin, also the case investigation officer, produced the three before the court after their remand and sought their detention in jail.
No bail petition was filed on their behalf, and the court subsequently ordered them sent to jail.
Earlier on Monday, the court granted the three five days of remand. Before that, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-2 arrested them during a drive and seized a Yamaha R15 motorcycle allegedly used in the snatching.
According to the case documents, Ranjila Parveen, 56, was the headteacher of Bagbari Government Primary School in Bogra’s Gabtali upazila.
On August 29, she was traveling to Dhaka with her husband, Md Abdul Matin, to visit an ophthalmologist.
At around 5:55am, when they reached the road near Gate 12 of the National Parliament Building on Manik Mia Avenue, motorcycle-riding snatchers allegedly pulled her handbag.
Ranjila fell from the moving autorickshaw onto the road and suffered a serious head injury.
She was rescued and taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in critical condition. She was later declared dead while being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Following the incident, her husband filed a case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station.
