Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury has warned that artificial intelligence (AI) must not be used to write court judgments.
He made the remarks while inaugurating the country’s first AI Governance Summer School at the Asiatic Society Bangladesh auditorium in Dhaka on Saturday.
The chief justice said AI cannot be used to assess the subject matter of cases, relevant laws and provisions, facts and evidence, or a judge’s conscience. He therefore urged caution in using AI in judicial decision-making.
He also called for effective laws and policies to determine where and to what extent AI can be used.
“AI must be used to make people’s lives easier and protect fundamental rights,” he said.
The chief justice said training and skills were more important than infrastructure in ensuring the effective use of AI.
He also warned that using information generated by AI without proper verification could be risky.
