A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed food deliveryman Jibon alias Adil on a five-day remand in a case filed over an attack on Dr Mohammad Asadur Rahman, head of the ENT department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasan Shahadat passed the order following a plea by the case’s investigating officer. SI Rokonuzzaman of the prosecution department confirmed the matter.
Asadur Rahman was attacked around 11pm on August 17 in the capital’s Shantinagar area after leaving his chamber at Popular Diagnostic Centre and getting into an autorickshaw.
He suffered injuries to his head, face and eyes and was taken to DMCH, where he is undergoing treatment.
Jibon was detained at the scene and sent to jail the following day. On August 19, Paltan Model Police Station SI Md Atikuzzaman, the investigating officer, sought a 10-day remand for him.
During Tuesday’s hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi argued for the remand and sought the maximum period. Jibon had no lawyer.
Asked by the judge if he had anything to say, Jibon said he had gone to see a doctor and that the incident occurred there. He identified himself as a food deliveryman.
He also claimed that several guards at the scene had beaten and injured him, but said he did not know their names.
The court subsequently granted his five-day remand.
Another accused, Farhan Shahriar Evan, was placed on a five-day remand in the case on Saturday.
Asadur Rahman said he had received an extortion demand from an unknown number 11 days before the attack, with a deadline for payment. The attack occurred two days after the deadline expired.
He filed the case with Paltan Police Station on August 18.
