The High Court has upheld the death sentences of two convicts in the 2019 Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder case in Sonagazi, Feni.
The court also sentenced four other convicts to life imprisonment and acquitted 10 others.
The High Court bench comprising Justice Bhishmadev Chakraborty and Justice KM Rasheduzzaman Raja delivered the verdict on Monday, following hearings on the death references, appeals and jail appeals filed by the accused.
The two convicts whose death sentences were upheld are Siraj Ud Doula, the then-principal of Sonagazi Islamia Fazil (Degree) Madrasa, and Shahadat Hossain Shamim.
In the widely discussed case, the Feni Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal sentenced 16 people, including the madrasa's suspended principal Siraj Ud Doula, to death on October 24, 2019.
According to case documents, Siraj Ud Doula called Nusrat to his office on March 27, 2019, and sexually harassed her. He was arrested after a case was filed over the incident.
After Nusrat refused to withdraw the case, she was taken to the madrasa rooftop on April 6, where her hands and feet were tied, kerosene was poured over her body and she was set on fire.
Nusrat died on April 10 that year while undergoing treatment at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Following the attack, Nusrat's elder brother, Mahmudul Hasan Noman, filed a case with Sonagazi police station. The case was later converted into a murder case.
