Salman Shah murder case: Actor Don’s bail rejected

A Dhaka court has rejected the bail petition of actor Ashraful Haque Don, who was arrested in a case filed over the murder of film actor Mohammad Shahriar Emon, popularly known as Salman Shah.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order after hearing the petition on Wednesday afternoon.

Defence lawyer Md Tariqul Islam Jewel sought bail for Don, while Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi opposed the petition on behalf of the state.

After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail petition.

The defence petition stated that there were no specific allegations against Don in the case documents or the arrest forwarding report and that he was not involved in the alleged incident. It therefore sought his release on bail.

Don was arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the early hours of August 9. Later that day, case investigation officer CID Inspector Arifur Rahman produced him before the court and sought an order to send him to jail. The court granted the application.

Don had been barred from travelling abroad in connection with the Salman Shah murder case. The CID took him into custody after being alerted by immigration authorities. He was detained while travelling to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah.

Salman Shah died at his residence in Eskaton, Dhaka, on September 6, 1996. His death was initially reported as a suicide, but a murder case was later filed. Several names have surfaced during different stages of the investigation.

On October 20, 2025, Salman Shah’s brother Mohammad Alamgir Kumkum filed a case with Ramna police station on behalf of the actor’s mother, Neela Chowdhury, against 11 people, including Samira Haque.
