Retired army member Hafizur Rahman, the only person arrested in the murder case of Comilla college student Sohagi Jahan Tonu, was released from Comilla Central Jail on Tuesday after securing bail from the High Court.
He was released at 7:05pm after all required formalities were completed, Senior Jail Superintendent of Comilla Central Jail Mohammad Shah Alam Khan confirmed.
The jail authorities released Hafizur at 7:05pm after receiving the High Court's bail order and completing all necessary procedures, he said.
The High Court bench of Justice Zafar Ahmed and Justice Sathika Hossain granted Hafizur bail on Sunday following a hearing.
The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), which is investigating the case, arrested Hafizur from his residence in Keraniganj, Dhaka, on the night of April 22—nearly 10 years after Tonu was murdered.
He was produced before a Comilla court the following day, when the PBI sought a seven-day remand to question him. Comilla Senior Judicial Magistrate Mominul Haque later granted a three-day remand.
Investigation sources said the PBI collected Hafizur's DNA sample after his arrest and sent it for forensic examination. The DNA report has since been submitted to the court.
