A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to carry out a further investigation into the murder of Primeasia University student and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leader Zahidul Islam Parvez.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sefatullah passed the order after hearing a protest petition (naraji) filed by the complainant against the police charge sheet.
The court directed the CID to submit its investigation report by September 7, state prosecutor Harun-or-Rashid said.
Parvez, a Textile Engineering student at the Banani-based private university, was fatally stabbed during a clash between students of the Textile Engineering and English departments shortly after 4:00pm on April 19 last year.
The following day, the victim's cousin, Humayun Kabir, filed a murder case with Banani Police Station.
After completing the investigation, Banani Police Inspector AKM Moin Uddin submitted a charge sheet to the court on April 29, accusing nine people, including two women.
The charge-sheeted accused are Meheraj Islam, Abu Johor Giffari alias Piyas, Md Mahathir Hasan, Md Al Kamal Sheikh alias Kamal, Alvi Hossain Junayed, Al Amin Sani, Fatema Tahsin Oishi, Faria Haque Tina and Rakib.
The investigating officer, however, recommended the discharge of eight other accused, including Sobhan Niaz Tushar, joint convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Banani, citing insufficient evidence.
The others recommended for discharge are Maruf Miaji Hridoy, Rifat, Ali, Fahim, Sakib, Nasim and Nibir.
Humayun Kabir challenged the recommendation by filing a protest petition, alleging that the investigation was incomplete and flawed.
Advocate Mohammad Afzal Hossain Mridha represented the complainant during Tuesday's hearing, while Harun-or-Rashid appeared for the prosecution.
After hearing both sides, the court ordered the CID to conduct a further investigation into the case.
