A Narayanganj court on Sunday sentenced a man to death for killing a 77-year-old woman and stealing her gold jewelry in Rupganj in 2021.
Judge Md Abu Shamim Azad of the Narayanganj District and Sessions Judge Court delivered the verdict, also imposing an additional 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for robbery, along with fines totaling Tk 250,000.
The convict, Md Rubel Mia, also known as Rubel Pradhan, was present in court during the judgment.
According to the prosecution, Rubel entered the victim Shafia Begum’s house on January 22, 2021 and fatally attacked her with a sharp weapon before fleeing with a gold chain and earrings.
The victim’s daughter later filed a murder and robbery case with Rupganj Police Station. Police submitted the charge sheet in June 2023, and Rubel later confessed before a magistrate under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Prosecutors said the murder was motivated by Rubel’s need for money to buy drugs. The court delivered the verdict after examining testimony from 12 prosecution witnesses.
