The State Dialogue Forum (SDF) has submitted a petition to the International Crimes Tribunal, seeking an investigation into the alleged role of former president Mohammed Shahabuddin in the killings during the July 2024 mass uprising, as well as enforced disappearances and torture during the Awami League's rule.
The petition was submitted to the Chief Prosecutor on Sunday by the forum's central member secretary, Al Noor Mohammad Ayas.
In the petition, Ayas alleged that he was abducted by masked men from the Mohakhali bus terminal on the night of January 18, 2025, after leading protests at Shahbagh demanding Shahabuddin's resignation. He claimed he was subjected to physical and psychological torture and was forced to record a video message calling for the suspension of the movement.
According to the petition, he was abandoned near the Kawran Bazar-Banglamotor area the following day and was later rescued and admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Ayas also urged the tribunal to investigate Shahabuddin's alleged role as an instigator of the shootings, killings, enforced disappearances and other alleged human rights abuses against students and civilians during the July 2024 mass uprising.
He further called for an impartial and independent investigation into Shahabuddin's constitutional role and responsibilities as the then president, as well as whether he bore any legal liability or involvement in the 2024 election, alleged human rights violations, and events related to the mass uprising.
