A Dhaka court on Tuesday convicted a man and sentenced him to death for killing his wife in 2017.
Judge of the Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court-6, Sadekin Habib Bappi, handed down the judgment.
The convict is identified as Monir Hossain, a resident of the Badda area in the capital.
According to the prosecution, Monir Hossain married Shakila Khatun Shoma in 2003. The couple had one daughter.
Shoma was repeatedly pressured to bring money from her family. Over time, her family paid Monir Tk11 lakh.
On October 6, 2017, Monir had an altercation with his wife over the issue and at one stage, he slit Shoma's throat with a sharp weapon, leaving her critically injured.
She was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Shoma's mother, Akter Banu, filed a case with Badda Police Station.
Police arrested Monir, who later gave a confessional statement admitting his guilt.
On December 7, 2017, police submitted a chargesheet against Monir.
After examining records and 15 witnesses, the court handed down the punishment.
