A Dhaka court on Monday placed security guard Russell Mridha on a three-day remand for questioning in connection with the rape and murder of a six-year-old girl in capital's West Rampura.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibuzzaman passed the order after the investigation officer sought his remand. SI Maruf Reza of the prosecution division confirmed the matter.
According to the case statement, the minor girl went missing from West Rampura at around 9:00pm on February 24. Her body was found around 11:30pm, lying face down in water inside the unfinished lift shaft of a nearby under-construction building.
The following day, the girl's father, Liton, filed a case with Hatirjheel Police Station.
Police initially arrested Russell under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and sent him to jail. He was later shown arrested in the case and placed on a three-day remand on March 5.
Subsequent forensic examination found evidence that the girl had been raped.
On June 13, the investigation officer SI Jahangir Alam of the Detective Branch's (DB) Mohammadpur Zonal Team, sought a seven-day remand to further question Russell. The court fixed Monday for the hearing in the presence of the accused.
During Monday's hearing, Russell was produced before the court. His lawyer Zahir Hossain sought cancellation of the remand and prayed for bail. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the plea and granted a three-day remand.
