A Dhaka court on Monday showed former Bhola-4 lawmaker Abdullah Al Islam Jakob arrested in an attempted murder case filed over the shooting of a protester during the July uprising in Mirpur.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after Sub Inspector Md Ashraful Doula and the investigating officer of Mirpur Model Police Station, sought to have Jakob shown arrested in the case.
Jakob was produced before the court wearing handcuffs, a bulletproof vest and a helmet, according to defence lawyer Md Khair Uddin.
In the application, the investigating officer said Awami League activists allegedly attacked anti-discrimination student protesters and opened indiscriminate fire during the movement, leaving complainant Md Rifat Hossain with a bullet wound above his right knee.
The application further stated that Jakob, a former MP for Bhola-4 and an active Awami League member, needed to be shown arrested to ensure a fair investigation.
According to the case statement, Rifat joined the anti-discrimination student movement in front of Mirpur Girls' Ideal School and College in Mirpur Section-10 on the morning of August 4, 2024.
At around 2:00 pm, acting on the accused's instructions, 30 to 40 people, armed with firearms, locally made weapons and sticks, allegedly attacked the protesters and fired indiscriminately, leaving Rifat shot above his right knee.
The complaint also alleged that after he collapsed from the gunshot wound, the attackers kicked, punched and assaulted him with local weapons in an attempt to kill him. Fellow protesters rescued him and took him first to Islami Bank Hospital and later to Kurmitola General Hospital, where he underwent treatment for about a month. Doctors later removed the bullet from his leg through surgery.
