Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury has expressed deep sorrow over the death of former acting president, former speaker, former minister and senior Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar.
The information was disclosed in a condolence message issued on Sunday by Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Md Shafiqul Islam.
On behalf of himself, the judges of the Appellate and High Court divisions, and the officers and staff of the Supreme Court Registry, the chief justice prayed for the eternal peace of Jamiruddin Sircar's soul and expressed sympathy to his bereaved family.
As a mark of respect, the Appellate and High Court divisions of the Supreme Court will remain closed during the second half of Sunday. The Chamber Court will also remain closed.
Jamiruddin Sircar was a prominent figure in Bangladesh's politics and legal profession. He served as acting president, speaker of parliament and a minister, and practised law at the Supreme Court for many years.
He died at 4:19am on Sunday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital.
