HC disposes of 2,411 old cases in a single day

The High Court Division of the Supreme Court on Thursday disposed of 2,411 long-pending cases in a single day as part of its special drive to reduce the backlog of old cases.

Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Md Shafiqul Islam disclosed the matter in a press release issued on Thursday.

According to the release, the High Court's criminal motion benches disposed of 1,655 old criminal miscellaneous cases, while the writ motion benches cleared 756 old writ cases, bringing the total number of cases disposed of during the day to 2,411.

Since the special initiative began, a total of 26,560 old cases have been disposed of over six working days, held once a week, including 19,836 criminal miscellaneous cases and 6,724 writ cases.

The press release said the special drive is being conducted under the directives of the Chief Justice of Bangladesh to expedite the disposal of long-pending cases in the High Court Division's criminal motion and writ motion benches.

The initiative aims to ensure faster access to justice, reduce the case backlog, and enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the judicial system.

The special programme began on May 7, with judges of the criminal motion and writ motion benches giving priority to long-pending criminal miscellaneous and writ cases on designated days each week.

The Supreme Court said the special case disposal drive will continue in the coming weeks.
