A Dhaka court on Wednesday showed former lawmaker and folk singer Momtaz Begum arrested in an attempted murder case filed over an incident in Mirpur during the July 2024 uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after police submitted a petition seeking to show her arrested in the case, said state prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi.
Earlier, investigation officer Md Azizul Haque, a sub-inspector of Mirpur Model Police Station, produced Momtaz before the court and sought the order.
According to the petition, investigators found evidence suggesting her involvement in the incident. Police told the court that the investigation is ongoing and that they may seek remand for further questioning.
According to the case statement, complainant Md Mukhtar Hossain joined a protest near the Swimming Pool and Fire Service Road area in Mirpur on August 4, 2024. The complaint alleged that police and Awami League activists attacked demonstrators and opened fire to disperse the protest.
Mukhtar allegedly sustained injuries to his chest and other parts of his body after being hit by rubber bullets fired by police. He later received treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital and subsequently filed the attempted murder case.
Momtaz was arrested by members of the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch from a residence behind Star Kabab in Dhanmondi on May 12, 2025. A court granted a four-day remand the following day, and she has remained in jail since.
Momtaz was elected to parliament on an Awami League nomination from a reserved women's seat in 2009. She later won the Manikganj-2 constituency in the 2014 and 2018 national elections but lost the seat in the January 2024 election to an independent candidate.
