A Dhaka court on Monday ordered former reserved-seat lawmaker Sabina Akter Tuhin and Kafrul Thana Mohila Awami League President Rokeya Jamal to be shown arrested in two separate cases linked to the July uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order Monday morning following petitions filed by investigating officers.
According to court sources, Sub-Inspector Md Ahsan Sohel Sourav of Mirpur Model Police Station and also the investigating officer in the attempted murder case sought to show Sabina Akter Tuhin as arrested in the case. In another proceeding, Sub-Inspector Md Kabir Hossain of the same police station produced Rokeya Jamal before the court and prayed for her arrest to be formally shown.
During the hearing, state prosecutor Shamsuddoha Suman supported the prosecution’s plea, while defence lawyer Morshed Hossain Shahin opposed the applications and sought bail for both accused.
After the hearing, the court ordered that both accused be shown arrested in the respective cases.
The case statement says that on August 4, during the anti-discrimination student movement, complainant and victim Milon Panna was shot in front of Ideal School and College in Mirpur-14.
A case was subsequently filed naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 400–500 unidentified persons. Sabina Akter Tuhin was shown arrested as a suspect in that case.
In a separate incident during the same movement, Md Shakil was shot in Mirpur-10 and later died while undergoing treatment. His father filed a case naming the principal accused along with around 300 unidentified persons. Rokeya Jamal was shown arrested as a suspect in that case.
Investigating officers told the court that showing the accused as arrested was necessary for the proper investigation of the cases. The court later approved both applications.
