A Bogra court has granted bail to Rezanur Islam, acting editor of the daily Agrajatra Pratidin, who was arrested in a case filed over the publication of a news report concerning State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam.
Bogra Senior Judicial Magistrate Mehedi Hasan granted his bail on Sunday afternoon.
Defence lawyer Tanzim Al Mezbaha said the court approved the bail until submission of the charge sheet, as the complainant’s lawyer did not raise any objection. He added that the ruling has brought relief among professional journalists.
According to the case statement, Agrajatra Pratidin published a report alleging corruption involving Mir Shahe Alam, Member of Parliament for Bogra-2 and State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives.
Following the report, Tanvir Alam Rimon, treasurer of Bogra Press Club and northern region correspondent of The New Nation, filed a case on June 15 before the Bogra Senior Judicial Magistrate Court against six individuals, including the newspaper’s editor-publisher. The complaint also named two to three unidentified persons.
Acting on a court order, Sadar Police Station registered the case under various sections of the Cyber Security Act 2026, and later transferred the investigation to the Bogra Detective Branch (DB) of police.
The other accused in the case are Mehedi Hasan, publisher and editor of Daily Agrajatra Pratidin; Ashraf Ali Faruqi, news editor; Saleh Kaisar, a staff reporter; Md Shams, its Bogra correspondent; and Sabbir Hasan, Bogra district correspondent.
A team of Bogra Detective Branch (DB) police arrested Rezanur on Thursday night from the Board Bazar area under Gacha union in Gazipur Sadar upazila.
He is the son of Jalil Mia of the Bosura area under Joydebpur upazila in Gazipur.
He was produced before the Bogra court on Friday evening, which sent him to jail and fixed Sunday for the hearing.
Following Sunday’s hearing, the court granted him bail until submission of the charge sheet. He is expected to be released after completion of bail formalities, officials said.
