A Dhaka court on Monday granted 3 days of remand to Lt Gen (retd) Masud Uddin Chowdhury in a murder case filed over the killing of Biplob Sheikh during the July uprising in Mirpur.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Piyas passed the order on Monday afternoon after hearing a petition from the investigation officer.
The investigation officer told the court that people named in the case opened fire on instructions from Chowdhury in an attempt to suppress the movement, killing Biplob Sheikh. He said a preliminary investigation had found evidence of Chowdhury’s involvement and sought 5 days of remand to identify others linked to the incident.
State lawyer Harun Or Rashid supported the remand petition, saying the accused was involved in the incident and was a mastermind of the 1/11 period. He also said the accused tortured Tarique Rahman and forced him to leave the country, and provided support to keep former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in power.
Defense lawyer Umme Habiba opposed the petition, saying the accused’s name was not mentioned in the case statement. She also said he was a former MP and physically unwell, and sought cancellation of the remand.
After hearing both sides, the court granted 3 days of remand.
According to investigation sources, Biplob Sheikh was shot during a student movement at Mirpur-10 on July 19, 2024. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries and died while undergoing treatment.
Biplob Sheikh’s father, Parvez Sheikh, filed the murder case at Mirpur Model Police Station on July 1, 2025.
Earlier, the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam showed Chowdhury as arrested in the case. In a separate case, he has already been placed on 24 days of remand in six phases.
