Ex-intelligence official Manzil Haider placed on remand again in anti-terror case

A Dhaka court on Thursday once again placed former Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) officer Major (retd) Manzil Haider Chowdhury on remand in an anti-terrorism case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam passed the order granting a three-day remand after a petition was submitted by the investigating officer. Sub-Inspector Shah Alam of the prosecution department confirmed the order.

Manzil was arrested from the Mohakhali DOHS area on April 9. Since his arrest, he has been placed on remand multiple times in different cases.

He was earlier placed on 12 days of remand in three phases in a case filed with New Market Police Station over the killing of businessman Abdul Wadud.

In a separate case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Ramna Model Police Station, he was placed on a five-day remand on April 22 and a four-day remand on April 26.

After completing nine days of remand in two phases in that case, Inspector Md Amjad Hossain Talukdar of the Ramna zone team produced him before the court and sought a further seven-day remand.

State lawyer Shamshuddhoha Suman supported the remand plea, while defence counsel Advocate Kamal Hossain opposed it, seeking cancellation of the remand and bail.

After hearing both sides, the court granted a three-day remand.

According to the case statement, members of the government-declared banned organization Chhatra League and the Awami League, along with their affiliated bodies, brought out a procession in front of Rupayan Tower under Ramna Police Station jurisdiction at around 2:45pm on September 12, 2025.

They were allegedly involved in propaganda activities aimed at reviving banned organizational activities, conspiring against the state and government, and spreading harmful messages.

At around 3:15pm, when police were spotted at the scene and the accused attempted to flee, several individuals were detained from the spot.

SI Awlad filed the anti-terrorism case at Ramna Model Police Station on the same day.
