Court orders report against actor Zaher Alvi over death of wife

A Dhaka court has directed that a report be submitted by April 15 in a case of abetment of suicide against actor Jaher Alvi and one other person, in connection with the recovery of the body of his wife, Ivnath Khan Ikra, from their residence in Mirpur, Dhaka.

The other accused is Alvi’s mother, Nasrin Sultana Shiuly.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin issued the order on Monday. Sub-inspector Saiful Islam of the prosecution department said the case’s FIR was received on Sunday afternoon. The court accepted the FIR and instructed that the report be submitted by April 15.

According to the FIR, on Saturday around 11:45am., Ikra was found by family members hanging by a scarf from the ceiling fan of her residence. She was taken to Kurmitola Hospital by relatives and the house owner, where doctors declared her dead. Following the incident, police visited Kurmitola General Hospital, prepared the inquest report, and collected various pieces of evidence from the house.

Ikra’s maternal uncle, Sheikh Tanvir Ahmed, filed the case on Saturday night. In the complaint, he alleged that his niece was compelled to take her own life due to long-standing “family disputes and various forms of abuse.”
