Md Aminul Islam, newly-appointed chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), today assured that those who have committed no wrongdoing will not face any harassment.
"Those who have committed no wrongdoing will not face harassment through prosecution, but the real perpetrators will receive the punishment they deserve," he told reporters at the tribunal premises after assuming office Monday afternoon.
Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam added that he will make every effort to support the tribunal's judicial work in line with the aspirations of the martyrs of the July Mass Uprising.
He emphasized that ongoing and upcoming trials at the tribunal will be conducted diligently, ensuring that innocent individuals are protected from misuse of prosecution, while actual offenders face proper justice.
The newly-appointed chief prosecutor arrived at the tribunal premises around 2pm, and his predecessor, Muhammad Tajul Islam, handed over the charge at the Office of the ICT Chief Prosecutor around 2:15pm.
Later, the chief prosecutor exchanged greetings with the prosecutors present.
The government appointed Md Aminul Islam as ICT Chief Prosecutor, granting him the status, rank, and privileges of the Attorney General of Bangladesh.
Earlier in the day, the Solicitor Wing of the Law and Justice Division issued a gazette notification stating that the appointment would take effect immediately. The notification, signed by Solicitor Md Monjurul Hossain, also cancelled the appointment of Advocate Muhammad Tajul Islam as ICT chief prosecutor.
