The High Court on Monday granted six weeks’ anticipatory bail to 40 accused, including BNP candidate for the Sherpur-3 constituency Mahmudul Haque Rubel, in a case filed over the killing of Jamaat leader Maulana Rezaul Karim in Sherpur.
A High Court bench comprising Justice Kamrul Hossain Mollah and Justice Faisal Hasan Arif passed the order after hearing a bail petition filed by the accused.
Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal represented the accused during the hearing.
Earlier on Janury 28, Maulana Rezaul Karim, secretary of Jamaat-e-Islami’s Sribardi upazila unit, was critically injured during a clash between BNP and Jamaat leaders and activists. Later, he succumbed to his injuries while being taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
The clash was ensued between leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and the BNP over seating arrangements during an election manifesto announcement programme organized by the Jhenaigati Upazila Administration in Sherpur.
Following the incident, victim’s wife Marziaa filed a case with Jhenaigati Police Station, naming 234 people and accusing another 400 to 500 unidentified individuals. BNP candidate Mahmudul Haque Rubel was named as the prime accused.
On February 1, 40 accused, including Mahmudul Haque Rubel, filed an application with the High Court seeking anticipatory bail in the murder case.
