Chhatra League leader who lost wife, son released on bail

Jewel Hasan Saddam, president of Bagerhat Sadar Upazila Chhatra League (a banned organization), has been released in a case under the Explosives Act and the Special Powers Act.

The High Court granted him six months of bail, and he was freed from Jessore Central Jail on Wednesday afternoon.

Saddam’s lawyer, Saeed Ahmed Raja, confirmed the release to Dhaka Tribune, saying, “Saddam has been released this afternoon. He is returning home.”

Saddam’s father-in-law, Ruhul Amin Howlader, also confirmed the release, saying, “Saddam has been released. He is on his way home.”

The High Court bench, comprising Justice JBM. Hasan and Justice Aziz Ahmed Bhuiyan, issued the bail order on Monday.

Earlier, on January 23, police recovered the hanging body of Saddam’s wife, Kaniz Subarna, 22, and the lifeless body of their nine-month-old son, Sejad Hasan, from Saberdanga village in Bagerhat Sadar Upazila.

Police and family members believed Swarnali killed the child and later took her own life due to depression. The denial of parole for Saddam sparked widespread criticism on social media.
