Five to die for murder of transport union leader Basu

A Dhaka tribunal on Wednesday sentenced five people to death in the murder case of Saidur Rahman Basu, former president of the Gopalganj Motor Workers' Union.

At the same time, four accused were sentenced to life imprisonment, while another 11 were also handed life terms.

Judge Md Rahibul Islam of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict, tribunal prosecutor Abdur Rashid Molla said.

Those sentenced to death are Bulbul Sheikh, Hedayet Sheikh, Tafsir Sheikh, Jhantu Sheikh and Kibria Kazi. Each of them was also fined Tk10,000.

The four convicts sentenced to life imprisonment are Mintu Sheikh, Kenai Molla, Alimuzzaman Bitu and Prince Khan. They were also fined Tk10,000 each.

The other 11 convicts who received life sentences are Iqbal Khan, Tutul Sheikh, Roni Sheikh, Akram Ali, Habil Kazi, Bulgan Kazi, Sajib Sheikh, Panir Sheikh, Sihab Sheikh, Rashed Sheikh alias Rashed Khan, and Shawkat Sheikh. Each was fined Tk10,000.

According to case records, Saidur Rahman Basu was murdered in 2016. His younger brother, Jasu Sheikh, filed a case with Gopalganj Sadar Police Station on February 19 that year.

On July 12, 2016, the investigating officer, Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Sub-Inspector Hazrat Ali, submitted a charge sheet against 23 people. Charges were framed on August 29, 2017, by then Gopalganj Sessions Judge Md Dalil Uddin.

The case was later transferred to Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 on August 16, 2018, where the trial was completed and the verdict delivered.
