Case filed against ex-home minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, 13 others

A case has been filed against former home minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir and 13 others under the Anti-Terrorism Act on charges including intimidation, threats and attempted murder, following an alleged incident at a private university in the capital’s Badda area.

The case was filed by Lutfar Rahman, director (legal affairs) of the European University of Bangladesh (EUB), with the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rakibul Hasan on Monday.

The court has taken cognizance of the case, the university’s lawyer Barrister Ziaur Rahman confirmed.

Another 30 to 35 unidentified individuals have also been named as accused.

Besides Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, the accused include his former personal secretary Farzana Alam; former European University vice-chancellor Maqbul Ahmed Khan; Wasiuzzaman Lelin, president of the Central Bangabandhu Parishad; expelled BNP leader MH Khan Manju; and others identified as Mashiur Rahman, Imran Mia, Mehedi Hasan, Imran, Rafiqul Islam, Monir Hossain, Munshi Abdur Rahman and Mamun Dakua.

According to the case statement, the accused allegedly entered the European University campus without permission and intimidated and harassed the complainant and witnesses. They are also accused of threatening to forcibly remove the complainant and others from the campus in collusion with each other.

The complaint further states that Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir is a former chairman of the university, while Farzana Alam and former vice-chancellor Maqbul Ahmed Khan are described as his political allies and business associates. Wasiuzzaman Lelin is identified as the president of the Central Bangabandhu Parishad, while the remaining accused are described as hired criminals.

Complainant Lutfar Rahman alleged that former vice-chairman Maqbul Ahmed Khan attempted to take control of the university in defiance of clear court orders by entering the campus with outsiders. He said that on January 22, around 2pm, Maqbul Ahmed Khan entered the EUB campus in Mirpur with a group of outsiders and removed the nameplate from the office of the current chairman, Ahmed Farhad Khan Tanim, creating panic among students and staff.

He added that CCTV footage from January 22 to 24 captured the incidents and related chaos on campus.

Barrister Ziaur Rahman said the High Court, in a verdict delivered on December 14, 2025, in Civil Writ Petition No 4035 of 2025, allowed Dr Maqbul Ahmed Khan to enter the campus alone and, if necessary due to age, with one associate. The order, however, clearly barred entry with groups or outsiders and warned of contempt proceedings for any violation.

Despite this, Maqbul Ahmed Khan allegedly attempted to occupy the campus with outsiders, who were seen in CCTV footage remaining on the premises with a group referred to as the “Pekua Bahini,” the lawyer said.

He further alleged that on January 22, more than a hundred outsiders, including dismissed officers and expelled students, gathered outside the campus before entering, leading to an unstable situation that seriously threatened security. As a result, the university authorities suspended academic activities for two days to ensure student safety.

Following the incident, a general diary was filed with Darus Salam Police Station, after which the court ordered an investigation taking the GD into consideration.
