Hearing on writ seeking suspension of Sucsu election on Monday

A writ petition seeking suspension of the elections to the central students’ union (Sucsu) and hall unions of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) in Sylhet is scheduled for hearing on Monday.

The case has been placed third on the cause list for hearing before a High Court bench comprising Justice Fahmida Kader and Justice Md Asif Hassan on Monday.

Earlier on Sunday, a writ petition was filed with the High Court seeking suspension of the Sust central students’ union and hall union elections. The petition was filed by independent Sucsu candidate Mominur Rashid Shuvo with the relevant branch of the High Court.

The chief election commissioner and other concerned parties have been named as respondents in the writ petition.

According to the petition, the Election Commission had issued directives to suspend all elections ahead of the national parliamentary election. Under such circumstances, holding the Sucsu election would not be lawful as the election is scheduled to be held on January 20.

Meanwhile, the campaign period for candidates contesting the Sust central students’ union and hall union elections has been extended by 12 hours. The information was disclosed in a notice signed by Sust Chief Election Commissioner Abul Mukit Mokaddes.

The notice said that campaigning by candidates was disrupted after the Bangladesh Election Commission suspended all elections nationwide on January 12.

Subsequently, on January 15, the Election Commission granted permission to hold the Sucsu election on January 20, 2026. To facilitate campaigning, the deadline for electioneering has been extended until 9pm on January 18.

Under the election code of conduct, campaigning is required to end 48 hours before polling, which meant the deadline had originally expired at 10pm on Saturday.

However, following applications from several candidates, the campaign period was extended. Candidates will be allowed to campaign until 9pm on Sunday.

Voting will take place on January 20 from 9am.
