A Dhaka court has granted a third-round three-day remand for Sibiyun Dew and Sanjay Chisim, arrested from a border area, and placed Faisal, arrested in Narsingdi with the murder weapon, on a three-day remand in the Sharif Osman Hadi murder case.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam passed the remand orders on Tuesday following two separate petitions filed by the investigating officer.
Assistant Public Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Suman argued in favour of the remand on behalf of the state. No lawyers appeared for the accused. The court later issued the three-day remand orders.
Earlier, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) reported that Sibiyun Dew and Sanjay Chisim were detained on December 15 for interrogation. After questioning, they were shown arrested in the case and produced before the court on December 18, when police sought seven days’ remand for each. The court granted three days.
On December 21, a second-round remand of five days was approved. After completion of the remand, they were sent to jail on Friday.
Meanwhile, a RAB-11 team arrested new accused Faisal on December 16 following a tip-off during a raid in front of Mollah Bari in Tarua area under Narsingdi Sadar Police Station. During the operation, the firearm and bullets used in Hadi’s murder were recovered from inside water in Tarua Beel. Faisal was later shown arrested in an arms case and sent to jail.
On Tuesday, DB Police Motijheel Division Inspector Faisal Ahmed, the investigating officer, produced Faisal before the court and sought a seven-day remand.
In the remand petition, the investigating officer stated that this is a sensational murder case. Based on information provided by Saheda Parvin Samia, wife of principal accused and fugitive Faisal Karim Masud, police recovered a pistol and bullets from Tarua Beel under Narsingdi Sadar Model Police Station at around 11pm on December 16. An arms case was subsequently filed at Narsingdi Sadar Model Police Station.
The investigating officer said it is believed that the recovered firearm and ammunition were used in the sensational Osman Hadi murder in Paltan. Remand was sought to interrogate Faisal about the source and supplier of the weapon, determine the motive behind the killing, identify and arrest instigators, and capture fugitive suspects.
Separately, police sought seven days’ remand for Sibiyun Dew and Sanjay Chisim to re-interrogate them in order to identify and arrest a suspected border smuggling kingpin named Philip, determine whether others were involved besides Philip, uncover who coordinated the murder mission with him, and identify the financiers and instigators.
Hadi, who rose to prominence through the July uprising and the movement to ban the Awami League, had announced his intention to contest the 13th parliamentary election as an independent candidate from Dhaka-8 constituency.
On December 12, Hadi was shot in the head while conducting a public outreach campaign in the Bijoynagar area. He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for surgery and later transferred to Evercare Hospital in critical condition. Doctors described his condition as “extremely critical.”
On December 15, afternoon, Hadi was airlifted to Singapore for advanced treatment. He passed away while undergoing treatment there on December 18.
