Anis Alamgir placed on 5-day remand in anti-terrorism case

A Dhaka court on Monday granted a five-day remand for journalist Anis Alamgir in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam issued the order after police produced Anis before the court and sought a seven-day remand in the case, said state lawyer Shamsuddoha Suman.

Earlier, police had sought a seven-day remand in the case filed by Uttara West Police Station. The remand application was submitted on Monday by the investigating officer, Inspector Muniruzzaman of Uttara West Police Station.

On Sunday, officers of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch (DB) took Anis Alamgir into custody after he left a gym in Dhanmondi-2. He was later taken to the DB office for questioning.

Meanwhile, a case was filed late Sunday night against four individuals, including actress Meher Afroz Shaon, by Arian Ahmed, a central organizer of the July Revolutionary Alliance. The other accused are Maria Kispotta (fashion model) and Imtu Ratish Imtiaz (television presenter).

According to the case statement, although former prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country following the anti-discrimination student movement, her supporters allegedly remained in hiding and conspired to destabilize the state and destroy infrastructure. The accused were alleged to have promoted banned organizations through social media and television talk shows since August 5, 2024, with the aim of rehabilitating the Awami League.

In the remand application, the investigating officer stated that further interrogation was necessary to identify absconding accomplices, collect digital evidence and conduct raids in connection with the case.
