Full verdict on death sentences of Hasina, Kamal published

The full verdict sentencing ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for crimes against humanity over the July–August uprising has been published.

Their lawyers said the two must now file appeals within 30 days.

The verdict was released on Wednesday.

Earlier, on November 17, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced both to death in the case. Former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, who served as a key witness, was handed a five-year prison sentence.

The tribunal delivered its ruling on two charges.

Charge 1: Three counts

Count 1: Inciting violence by calling protesters Razakars during a July 14, 2024 press conference at Ganabhaban.

Count 2: Ordering Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Maksud Kamal on the night of July 14 to “hang protesters,” while failing to restrain subordinates.

Count 3: Resulting police shooting that killed Abu Sayeed in Rangpur.

Sentence: Life imprisonment for both accused.

Charge 2: Three counts

Count 1: Ordering, during conversations on July 18, 2024, with Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and later Hasanul Haque Inu, the use of drones, helicopters and lethal weapons to locate and kill protesters.

Count 2: Resulting police shooting that killed six protesters in Chankharpul on August 5.

Count 3: Killing of six protesters in Ashulia on August 5 and burning of their bodies.

Sentence: Death for both accused.

All assets belonging to the two were ordered confiscated by the state for distribution among victims.

Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun received five-year sentences on each of the two charges.
