Case filed over alleged derogatory Facebook post about Tarique Rahman

A case has been filed in the Dhaka Cyber Tribunal against a man named Shahin Mahmud for allegedly making derogatory remarks about BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman in a Facebook post.

On Wednesday, Iltutmish Saudagar, joint general secretary of the JCD leaders' lawyer Forum, along with his assistants, filed the case in the court of Dhaka Cyber Tribunal Judge Saidur Rahman Gazi. After recording the complainant’s statement, the court kept the order pending, Advocate Tahmina Liza, one of the lawyers for the complainant, told Dhaka Tribune.

According to the case statement, on November 12, 2025, BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman said in a virtual speech at a party rally: “Given the current situation, getting a fair price for potatoes is far more important than a referendum.”

The accused, Shahin Mahmud (MH), on Saturday, made a post on his verified Facebook profile addressing Tarique Rahman. In the post, he wrote: “Instead of buying a bulletproof car for Tk88 crore, if that money had been given to farmers, they would have received fair prices for onions and potatoes.”

The complaint alleges that through this “irrational and false” post, the accused attempted to undermine the honor, reputation, patriotism, and political foresight of acting chairman Tarique Rahman.

It further states that the accused intentionally engaged in criminal activities by tarnishing Tarique Rahman’s political and social reputation. The complaint also claims that no luxury bulletproof vehicle was purchased for the alleged amount of Tk88 crore.
