Charges filed at ICT over burning of six bodies in Ashulia

The prosecution filed formal charges with the registrar of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Wednesday over the killing of six people and the burning of their bodies in Ashulia during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement last year.

On June 24, ICT-1, led by Chairman Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, had scheduled July 2 (Wednesday) as the date to file the formal charges, with Saimum Reza Talukder appearing on behalf of the prosecution during the court hearing.

Prosecutor Mizanul Islam informed reporters that the investigation agency submitted its report on the case involving the burning of six bodies in Ashulia on June 19.

They requested an additional week to file the formal charges.

The investigation report identified the involvement of 16 people in the incident, of whom seven have been arrested.

They are former additional superintendent of police (crime and OPS) in Dhaka district Md Abdullahil Kafi, former additional superintendent of police (Savar circle) Md Shahidul Islam, then-OC AFM Syed, DB Inspector Md Arafat Hossain, SI Malek, and Constable Mukul.

Notably, on August 5, 2024, six youths lost their lives in police firing in Ashulia, Savar, and their bodies were later taken to a van and burned.

During the incident, one person was still alive but was not spared, as he was burned alive after petrol was poured on him.

On September 11, a case was filed with the ICT, categorizing the incident as a crime against humanity.
