A Dhaka court has granted bail to Mozammel Haque Dhali, president of the Swechhasebak Dal’s Dhaka North unit and the prime accused in a case over assaulting former chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda, along with two other members of the organization.
The other two accused are Md Hanif, general secretary of the Swechhasebak Dal’s Uttara West thana unit, and Md Kaiyum, joint convener of the organization’s Uttara East thana unit.
Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sanaullah granted them bail on Wednesday, after a hearing. Earlier in the day, Uttara West police Inspector Md Nazrul Islam, the investigation officer of the case, produced them in court and sought to keep them in jail.
Defence lawyers submitted bail petitions, after which the magistrate granted the petitions.
Sub-inspector Atikur Rahman from the court’s prosecution division confirmed the matter.
Earlier, on the night of Monday, a military team detained Hanif from Uttara. The next day, police arrested the other two.
According to the case statement, on Sunday, a group of people entered Nurul Huda’s house in Uttara and forcibly brought him outside.
They placed a garland of shoes around his neck, assaulted him, and handed him over to the police. He was reportedly struck with shoes and pelted with eggs. A video of the incident went viral on social media.
On Tuesday, Sub-inspector Sajib Hasan of Uttara West police station filed a case over the incident.
