SC to hear EC explanation on Thursday over plea against Ishraque’s mayorship

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday adjourned until Thursday the hearing on a leave-to-appeal petition seeking a stay on the court judgment and Election Commission (EC) gazette that declared BNP leader Ishraque Hossain as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

The full bench of the Appellate Division, headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, passed the order, saying that it would hear the EC’s explanation on the matter on Thursday.

Senior Advocate Mohammad Hossain moved the plea before the court, while senior jurists Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon and Barrister AKM Ehsanur Rahman argued on behalf of Ishraque.

Supreme Court lawyer Md Mamunur Rashid filed the writ petition with the concerned wing of the Appellate Division on Monday.

Earlier, on May 21, the HC summarily rejected a writ petition filed by Rashid that challenged the verdict of the Dhaka First Joint District Judge and Election Tribunal declaring Ishraque as mayor of DSCC.

“Rejected summarily with observation and direction,” said the order passed by the HC division bench of Justice Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury.

Previously, on Tuesday, Judge Md Nurul Islam of the Dhaka First Joint District Judge and Election Tribunal cancelled the results of the 2020 DSCC election and declared Ishraque as mayor.

The EC issued the gazette notification on April 27, officially declaring the BNP leader as mayor.
