ICT sends 3 ex-policemen to jail in Ashulia mass killing case

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Tuesday sent three former police officers to jail in a mass killing and crimes against humanity case lodged over the killing of six youths during the July uprising and subsequently torching their bodies to conceal the evidence.

The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, passed the order, showing the three arrested in the cases.

The three accused are former additional superintendent of police (crimes and ops) Abdullahil Kafi, former additional superintendent of police Shahidul Islam and former inspector at Dhaka north Detective Branch (DB) Md Arafat Hossain.

According to the prosecution, police in Ashulia on August 5, 2024, allegedly shot and killed six youths and put their bodies into a van.

The van was then set ablaze in an attempt to destroy evidence and frame the incident as the result of protester violence.

"Tragically, one of the victims was still alive when the fire was set. Police poured petrol on the van and burned him alive," ICT Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam told newsmen earlier.
