A complaint has been filed at the International Crimes Tribunal against 41 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her former military adviser Tarique Ahmed Siddique, in connection with the 2013 murder of Dr Fayez Ahmed, then-naib-e-ameer of Lakshmipur Jamaat-e-Islami.
Dr Fayez Ahmed’s son, Dr Hasanul Banna, lodged the complaint with the Chief Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday, accusing the 41 of crimes against humanity.
According to the complaint, on December 23, 2013, Fayez was shot dead by Rapid Action Battalion personnel at his residence in Lakshmipur. After the killing, his body was thrown from the rooftop.
The victim’s wife, Marzia Fayez, said that around midnight, a RAB team broke into their house, searched various rooms and eventually asked Fayez to accompany them to the rooftop.
She added that when he refused, citing illness and difficulty climbing the stairs, he requested to be taken to the police station instead.
“Ignoring his plea, the RAB personnel forcibly took him to the rooftop, shot him and then threw his body down. Hours later, we were informed that his body was found near the hospital.”
Dr Zainal Abedin, a medical officer at the district state-owned hospital, said the body was abandoned outside the hospital at about 1:40am.
“It bore injuries to the head and legs. News of the murder quickly spread across the area, leaving party leaders and activists in tears over the death of their beloved leader. After the post-mortem, his funeral prayers were held at Uttar Temuhani Lillah Jame Mosque, followed by burial nearby.”
The complaint also names Tarique Saeed, a RAB officer and the alleged mastermind behind the 2014 Narayanganj seven murders, as a key perpetrator in Fayez’s killing.
