Michael Chakma files complaint against Hasina at ICT

Michael Chakma, a disappeared leader of the United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) found alive in August, has filed a complaint over his enforced disappearance since 2019 against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and unidentified individuals at the International Crimes Tribunal.

He submitted the complaint to the Chief Prosecutor's Office of the International Crimes Tribunal on Wednesday.

ICT Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam later told reporters: "We have taken Michael Chakma's complaint into consideration... we will begin investigating his allegations."

Earlier in the morning, Michael Chakma arrived at the tribunal to file the complaint, accompanied by photographer Shahidul Alam and Shahidul's wife, Prof Rahnuma Ahmed.

According to the complaint, on April 9, 2019, Michael Chakma was abducted in the Kanchpur area of Narayanganj while returning to Dhaka after completing organizational work.

Subsequently, the UPDF, its allied organizations, rights groups, teachers, civil society members, and Michael’s family held various programs demanding his rescue.

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, expressed concern and called on the erstwhile government to locate Michael.

Additionally, his family filed a complaint at Narayanganj police station and submitted a writ petition to the High Court seeking his whereabouts.

However, the complaint alleges that the previous government took no action to rescue him.

After the fall of Hasina's regime, Michael Chakma was found on August 7, after 5 years and 3 months in captivity.

On that day, early in the morning, he was reportedly released blindfolded at a location in Chittagong.
