A Gazipur court on Monday acquitted BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, along with 60 other BNP and Jamaat leaders and activists in a case filed over an arson attack on a passenger bus in Joydebpur, Gazipur.
With this, Tarique Rahman has been acquitted in four cases filed at different police stations in Gazipur.
The verdict was delivered by Judge Ahmed Shahriar Tarik of the Gazipur Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, confirmed Gazipur Metropolitan Court Inspector Ahsan Ullah Chowdhury.
According to court sources, the arson attack occurred in February 2015 in the Bhogra Bypass area of Joydebpur, where a passenger bus was set on fire.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Syed Abul Hossain of Joydebpur police station filed a case under the Special Powers (Explosives) Act.
The case initially named 41 individuals, including Hossain Ali from Bhogra, as primary suspects, alongside 20 to 30 unidentified individuals.
Later, Tarique Rahman was included as one of the accused, bringing the total number of accused to 61.
Following a prolonged trial, the court acquitted all accused due to a lack of evidence and the case being proven false.
