Former DNCC mayor Atiqul sent to jail following remand

Former Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Atiqul Islam has been sent to jail after completing a five-day remand in connection with the murder of Bakul Mia during an anti-discrimination movement at Azampur Bus Stand in Uttara East.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mehedi Hasan issued the order on Friday.

Investigating officer Inspector Mahmudur Rahman of the Uttara Zonal Team presented Atiqul in court and requested his detention, citing crucial information gathered during interrogation that is still under verification.

According to the initial investigation, Atiqul Islam, a former adviser to Dhaka North Awami League and DNCC mayor, allegedly directed ward councilors and others to disrupt a peaceful student rally on July 17.

The attackers, armed with legal and illegal firearms, reportedly fired indiscriminately, leading to Bakul Mia's injury and subsequent death on July 19.

Atiqul was arrested on October 16 from Mohakhali DOHS and was denied bail in three separate murder cases filed in Mohammadpur.

On November 13, the court granted a five-day remand for questioning him in Bakul Mia’s murder case.

The case was filed by Bakul’s wife, Monika Akter, at the Uttara East police station.
