A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking directives to prevent unapproved road blockades or disruptions to vehicular movement that cause public inconvenience on highways.
The petition was submitted on Tuesday by Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun, naming the secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges and others as respondents.
Speaking to journalists, the petitioner said: "On Monday, students of Titumir College blocked roads during their protest, causing significant disruption. Protests, gatherings, or human chains should be held only with prior approval from law enforcement agencies, ensuring that national highways are not obstructed and public suffering is avoided."
The petition seeks measures to ensure the protection of citizens' fundamental rights to safety and freedom of movement on roads, as guaranteed by the Constitution.
Additionally, it calls for specific instructions to prevent disruptions to traffic, even during authorized gatherings or protests, the lawyer added.
