Ex-minister Shahid, ex-mayor Atiqul, among four, on remand

The Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court has granted remand for four individuals in separate cases involving alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act and charges related to the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

Former agriculture minister Dr Abdus Shahid, who served as MP for Moulvibazar-4, has been placed on a three-day remand for a case under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act.

In a separate case, the court granted a five-day remand for former Dhaka North City Corporation mayor Atiqul Islam and a three-day remand for former Supreme Court Lawyers’ Association secretary Advocate Mumtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehdi.

Former additional secretary Amjad Hossain Khan was also ordered on a three-day remand in a Foreign Exchange Regulation Act case.

The remand orders were issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Farzana Shakila on Wednesday after a hearing led by Inspector Mahmudur Rahman of the Uttara Zonal Team, who applied for a 10-day remand of Mayor Atiqul in a case involving the shooting of Bakul Mia at Azampur Bus Stand in Uttara on July 17.

In connection with the foreign exchange case, the investigating officer requested a seven-day remand for Dr Abdus Shahid and Amjad Hossain Khan.

The remand for Mumtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehdi was sought for his alleged involvement in the death of Alamgir Hossain during an Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in August.

According to the case file, law enforcement arrested Dr Abdus Shaheed on October 29 at his residence in Uttara, where authorities recovered Tk3.1 crore, $1,953, various foreign currencies, and 85 tolas of gold jewellery and bars.

A case was subsequently filed at Uttara West police station on October 30 under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act.

Former mayor Atiqul’s case details that Bakul Mia was shot at the Azampur bus stand amid the anti-discrimination protests on July 17.

Mia’s wife later filed a case at Uttara East police station following his death on July 19.

In a related incident, Alamgir Hossain was reportedly killed during a student demonstration on August 5, leading his mother to file a murder case implicating 288 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, at Uttara West police station on October 6.

In the case against Amjad Hossain, law enforcement raided his rented house in Uttara on November 4, recovering Tk1.09 crore, various foreign currencies, luxury watches, and iPhones. A case was subsequently filed at Uttara West police station.

The lawyers of the accused appealed to dismiss the remand requests and sought bail, but the court proceeded with the remand orders following arguments from both sides.
