Former MP Fazle Karim placed on three-day remand

Former member of parliament ABM Fazle Karim Chowdhury has been placed on a three-day remand by a Chittagong court in a firearms case filed at Raozan police station.

Chittagong Chief Judicial Magistrate Kazi Shahidul Islam granted the remand on Monday following a hearing.

Fazle Karim was present in court during the remand hearing.

According to police and case sources, on September 25, the police conducted a raid at Fazle Karim Chowdhury's residence and seized a rifle, a locally made gun, a revolver, a shotgun, and seven rounds of ammunition. Except for the rifle, all other weapons were illegal. In this regard, the police filed a case under the Arms Act at Raozan police station.

He faces at least a dozen cases filed at various police stations in Chittagong with allegations including murder, abduction, ransom collection, attempted murder, framing others with weapons, forcing land transfers at gunpoint, vandalism, and land grabbing.

On the morning of September 12, Fazle Karim and two others were detained by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Abdullahpur near the Akhaura border in Brahmanbaria.

The BGB reported that he was attempting to illegally cross into India through the Akhaura border. On September 19, he was transported to Chittagong by helicopter to be shown arrested in the cases he was accused in.
