BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has been acquitted in a defamation case filed in a Dhaka court for criticizing the Awami League during a discussion in London five years ago.
On Sunday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arafatul Rakib's court issued the order.
Alongside Tarique Rahman, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi were also acquitted in this case.
Tarique Rahman's lawyer, Zainal Abedin Mezbah, revealed the information.
According to court sources, Sunday was set for the deposition in the case. However, no witnesses came forward to testify .
As a result, the defense requested the case's disposal. After the hearing, the court acquitted them under Section 247.
In 2019, AB Siddique, president of the Bangladesh Jananetri Parishad, filed the case.
Recently, Tarique Rahman was also acquitted in two sedition cases filed in Noakhali and a defamation case filed by a Chhatra League leader in Habiganj.
