Ex-BASIS president Almas Kabir freed on bail hours after arrest

Syed Almas Kabir, the former president of the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), has been freed on bail just hours after his arrest in a case filed in connection with July uprising.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Belal Hossain passed the bail order on Tuesday afternoon.

Later, he was released from the custody of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Dhaka since there are no other cases against him.

Almas Kabir was produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Dhaka by the police.

During the proceedings, the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Mainul Islam from Mohammadpur police station, requested to keep him in custody, while his lawyer filed a bail application.

In the hearing, his lawyer stated that he was abroad at the time of the incident and presented necessary documents from abroad to the court. The prosecution opposed the bail.

After hearing both sides, Metropolitan Magistrate Belal Hossain granted him bail.

Following this, his lawyer submitted the bail bond, and he was released from custody due to the absence of any other cases against him.

Earlier, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested Syed Almas Kabir, former president of the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) from Gulshan on Monday night in the case filed in connection with the killing of a student during the anti-discrimination movement in the capital's Mohammadpur area.

According to police sources, one Obaidul Haque filed the murder case at Mohammadpur police station.

In this case, along with Syed Almas Kabir, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, and 82 others have been named.
