Travel ban imposed on ex-land minister Saifuzzaman, wife

A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on former land minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Javed and his wife, Rukmila Zaman, in response to allegations of massive corruption.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Ash Shams Mohammad Zoglul Hossain issued the order following a petition from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday.

According to the ACC, Saifuzzaman is accused of amassing and laundering vast sums of money, with claims that he purchased 350 properties in the UK, 228 in the UAE, and nine in the US. These properties are reportedly registered under his name and those of his family members.

The ACC's plea emphasized that Saifuzzaman also created significant assets within Bangladesh using graft money, raising concerns that he and his wife might attempt to flee the country.

To ensure a thorough investigation, the ACC requested the travel ban.

The petition was filed by ACC Deputy Director Ram Prasad Mondal and was presented to the court by public prosecutor Mir Ahmed Ali Salam.
