Two separate CR cases have been filed in the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) against 26 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, alleging mass killings in Lakshmipur and Jatrabari during the mass uprising.
The families of the victims received legal assistance from the Jatiya Nagorik Committee in filing these cases.
The cases were submitted to the chief prosecutor of the tribunal on Thursday.
In one case, 22 people, including Sheikh Hasina, are named as accused, while the other case lists five accused. Former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal is named in both cases, bringing the total number of accused to 26.
The committee stated that on September 8, a 55-member Jatiya Nagorik Committee was formed to abolish fascist systems and establish new political arrangements.
Two families of the victims filed cases on Thursday in the tribunal with the assistance of the committee.
According to the committee, martyred Sakib Hasan, a student of Dania College, was shot dead on July 18 during a “complete shutdown” program initiated by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Jatrabari.
Sakib Hasan’s father, Md Murtaza Alam, filed the case.
Another case was filed by Md Abdur Rahman, father of Osman Patwary, a student of Chittagong Polytechnic Institute who was killed in a shooting on August 4 in Lakshmipur.
Sheikh Hasina is named as the prime accused in this case, along with other figures such as Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and several members of Awami League and affiliated groups.
Jatiya Nagorik Committee called upon other families of victims who have not yet pursued legal action to come forward and file complaints.
They also stated that the committee will monitor the progress of the investigation and continue to assist the victims' families throughout the legal process.
The committee emphasized that free legal aid, or "pro bono" services, will be provided not only to the victims of the July uprising but also to those who suffered oppression and injustice during the fascist rule of the Awami League in various educational institutions across the country.
