A Dhaka court on Saturday sent Dilip Kumar Agarwala, managing director of Diamond World Limited, to jail following his remand in connection with the murder of 16-year-old Hridoy Ahmed during the anti-discrimination student protests,
On Saturday, after a three-day remand, the investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Md Sadeq of Badda Police Station, presented Agarwala before the court and requested his continued detention.
In response, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dilruba Afrin Tithi granted the order to keep Agarwal in custody.
Defense attorneys had filed a petition for Agarwala's bail, which was opposed by the prosecution. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court denied the bail application and ordered Agarwal's continued detention.
SM Jahirul Islam, assistant GR officer of the Badda Police Station, confirmed the court’s decision.
In the application for continued detention, the investigating officer noted that, in line with directives from higher courts, Agarwala had been extensively interrogated.
During questioning, some information related to the murder case was obtained. Verification of this information, including details of the accused, is ongoing to ensure a fair investigation.
The officer highlighted concerns that releasing Agarwala on bail could lead to his fleeing or obstructing the investigation. Therefore, continued detention was deemed necessary until the investigation is completed.
Agarwal was apprehended by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on Tuesday from Gulshan, Dhaka. On Wednesday, he was placed under a three-day remand by a Dhaka Metropolitan Court.
The case alleges that on July 19, during the anti-discrimination student protests, Heart Ahmed was shot dead in front of Brac University in Badda at around 2pm.
Shahadat Hossain Khan filed a case against 161 individuals, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, in connection with the incident.
